Almost two years ago Jack and I were treated to a somewhat “unauthorized” tour of the old Kerr McGee campus prior to its handover to SandRidge Petroleum. The following images came from a stack that was found in a dumpster waiting to be sent to the trash heap.
The photos and the graphic are all we have on an experiment Kerr-McGee once tried with providing gasoline for people while they shopped at the neighborhood grocery.
So our question is – what ever became of this enterprise? Did it go much further than the National Food Center? And where was the National Food Center? It appears to be designed like an A&P as far as the signage goes.
The diagram explains how the system was set up. A service scooter was used to not just fuel up gas tanks, but also to fill up on oil and other needs.
I’m also curious as to whether the carts were even manned. If they were, why would it be necessary to pay inside the store?
What’s amazing is that this was apparently not a cheap and quick installation based on the photo to the left. This project involved some serious financial committment.
Notice how the installation involved a series of fuel lines?
Is that a track the scooter is lined up on?
